Japan-Peru Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
On November 15, commencing at 12:10 p.m. local time (5:10 a.m. on November 16 JST), for approximately 40 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting San Francisco, the United States to attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Javier González-Olaechea Franco, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Peru. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa expressed her pleasure at holding a meeting with Minister González-Olaechea, and extended her appreciation for courteous hospitality of the Peruvian side during the visit of Her Highness Imperial Princess Kako to Peru. Minister Kamikawa also stated that Japan would cherish the special bonds between the two countries through the Nikkei (Japanese immigrants and their descendants) community. In response, Minister González-Olaechea, on behalf of Peru, expressed his gratitude for the visit of Her Highness Imperial Princess Kako to Peru. He also stated that this meeting between the two ministers constitutes a special occasion, for both countries have long history and culture, share common values, and celebrate this year the 150th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations.
- The two ministers affirmed their collaboration to prepare for a bilateral cooperation road map and shared the view that they would work together for the success of APEC Peru 2024. The two ministers also reaffirmed great potential for strengthening bilateral economic relations, and highly appreciated the 14th Plenary of CEPEJA (PeruvianJapanese Business Council) recently held in Japan. They also confirmed their intention to enhance cultural and academic exchanges including with the help of the Japan Foundation’s first office in Spanish speaking countries in South America, which opened in Lima, Peru.
- The two ministers affirmed the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law, as both countries have consistently abided by up to now, in the face of challenges such as the situation surrounding IsraelPalestine and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and concurred in working closely together in addressing challenges that the international community faces.
- The two ministers congratulated on the third Japan-Peru foreign ministers meeting held during this memorial year of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Peru, and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate in deepening the bilateral relations further, contemplating the possibility of meeting again on the occasion of APEC Peru 2024.
